Lion of Waterloo in Wellington
Lion of Waterloo
The Lion of Waterloo in Wellington was built in 1841 and licensed in 1842 and is the oldest tavern still operating west of the Blue Mountains, and was once a passenger stop for Cobb & Co.
Numerous coaches stopped at this hotel after crossing the Macquarie River. It was a successful business venture and attracted settlers, station hands and later minters.
After their horses had been changed and passengers refreshed, Cobb and Co crossed the Bell River behind the Lion.
The Tavern still welcomes visitors and has some interesting history of its own (in 1854, it is said to have witnessed the last known duel in Australia).
This historic tavern with its rustic charm is open daily for drinks and dinner.
In 1854 two gentlemen, Dr Samuel Curtis and Mr Sheridan, drinking together at "The Lion of Waterloo", became involved in an argument. As there was no agreement to be reached they decided to fight a duel to settle the matter. The duel was held, with pistols, in a paddock opposite. Fortunately both gentlemen were so inebriated that no one was hurt and the pair returned to "The Lion" to drink to their friendship. A memorial with an attached plaque was erected on the site of the duel to mark the occasion of what is believed to be the Last Duel in Australia.
Today this piece of Wellington's history is a licensed Tavern offering a friendly, old time charm with a range of great meals serving the locals and tourists.
