Heyward's Royal Oak Hotel in Penola
Heyward's Royal Oak Hotel
Heyward's Royal Oak Hotel
Prominantly placed in front of this fine Hotel, is a life-sized statue of Alexander Cameron and a plaque depicted the origins of the Hotel and the township of Penola, which describes the history of the location, which now boasts the magnificent stone Hotel that was built in 1872.
The original Royal Oak Hotel built in 1848 actually predates the existence of the town of Penola. The land surrounding the Hotel was part of an estate of the late, great Alexander Cameron who first developed the area as a pastoralist in 1839. After building the hotel in 1848, he chose to subdivide the surrounding land forming the private township of Penola in 1850.
