Rainbow Beach, just like Fraser Island, allows cars on the beach. And why not. It is a wonderful thing to cruise the beach, stopping to throw in a line or have a swim wherever you like. And during low tide many people enjoy this experience. In fact you can drive from Noosa to Fraser Island along the beach. Just cross Noosa river by barge then drive to Inskip Point, north of Rainbow Beach to depart to the Island by connection barge. All you have to do is drive around Mudlow Rocks which is a rocky outcrop on the Beach near the Pub.

Rounding the Rocks is best done at low tide, and travellers should also understand that as a wave recedes it leaves a hollow on the seaward side of a rock.

Big rocks, big hole is how that works. And a few unfortunate part time seafarers get stuck as the tide comes in.

The temptation is helped by the fact that it's 2 minutes to Rainbow Beach by going around Rainbow Rocks or over 1 hour by going back through Freshwater.

... is that the tide must actually come over the roof of the car.

That is incidently also the point at which a car is written off by the insurance companies as the electrics are then well and truly shot.
